As alternative certification teachers, Partner Teachers receive an temporary entry-level certificate, known as a Transitional B certificate, while completing their master’s degrees. This certificate is valid for up to three years and enables alternative certification teachers to teach full-time, earning a salary and benefits, while they complete an approved master's degree in education and all other requirements for their initial certificate. The Transitional B is valid only while a PT remains in good standing with the program, the DOE, and with their university.
In order to be eligible for a Transitional B Certificate, all PTs must pass a fingerprint based background check with the Department of Education, and pass two New York State certification exams: the Content Specialty Test(s), or CST, which pertains to their assigned subject area, and the Educating All Students, or EAS.
Upon completion of their master’s degree and additional state requirements, PTs are eligible to apply for an Initial Certificate to continue their careers as teachers.
